Discraft Refresh | Same DNA, NEW LOOK AND FEEL

Discraft has been building since 1979. Over that time, our lineup has grown, plastics have evolved, new molds have pushed the game, and the way players understand disc flight has changed.

Now, the way we present those products is evolving too. Over the last year, we’ve taken a comprehensive look at the Discraft brand and the systems surrounding our lineup. That process went well beyond changing a logo or putting new artwork on a disc.

We looked at:

  • How our molds feel in hand.

  • How our molds are presented on the shelf.

  • How players identify plastic blends.

  • How our signature discs represent Team Discraft athletes.

  • How molds are categorized.

  • How flight numbers are communicated.

  • How different discs compare to one another.

  • And, ultimately, how easy it is for a player to pick up a Discraft disc and understand what they’re holding.

Some of these changes are immediately visible while others go much deeper. Together, they create a more consistent, easier-to-understand Discraft experience while keeping the products, history, and identity that brought us here.

A REFINED DISCRAFT LOGO
Discraft Logo Redesign Breakdown

The Discraft logo has been part of our identity for decades, so when it came time to refine it, the goal was never to start over. Instead, we focused on the details. The refreshed Discraft mark creates a cleaner, more balanced presentation while maintaining the identity players immediately recognize as Discraft.

WHAT CHANGED - The updated logo has been refined with consistency in mind. Small adjustments to its overall construction, spacing, balance, and presentation allow the mark to reproduce more cleanly across a wider range of applications and sizes. That matters because Discraft no longer lives in just one place.

Our logo might appear several feet wide at an event one moment and only a fraction of an inch across on a disc or digital graphic the next. Creating a more consistent mark gives us an identity that can move between those environments without losing what makes it recognizable.

WHY IT MATTERS - A stronger brand system starts with a strong foundation. The refined logo allows the rest of the Discraft identity to become cleaner and more consistent without competing with the products themselves. But when you’re standing in front of a wall of discs, the most important question is usually much simpler: What disc is this? That idea influenced nearly everything that came next.

A NEW LOOK AND FEEL FOR Z & ESP

Plastic blend changes for Z

Z and ESP have been two of the most recognizable plastic lines for years. With the refresh, both receive an updated feel and visual designed to make the disc itself easier to recognize, while creating stronger consistency across molds, plastics, categories, and flight

information.

But the update isn’t only something you’ll see. It’s something you’ll notice when you pick the disc up, too.

As part of our ongoing work with our production process, we’ve continued refining the finish of our discs with an emphasis on creating a more consistent grip and feel in the hand. The goal isn’t to reinvent Z or ESP. It’s to make two plastics players already trust feel and present themselves even better than before!

Z PLASTIC BLEND CHANGES

Z Sol | Explaining plastic changes to Z

Z has always been built around durability, consistency, and a confident feel in the hand. The refreshed Z lineup carries that same identity into a cleaner stock presentation. The updated design gives more visual weight to the mold name, helping players identify the disc faster whether they’re browsing a retail wall, digging through their own bag, or flipping through stacks at an event.

The Z plastic word mark has also been updated to fit within the larger Discraft system, creating a clearer visual relationship between the mold, plastic type, disc category, and flight information.

WHAT YOU’LL NOTICE:

  • A stronger mold identity.

    • The name of the disc takes a more prominent position in the overall design.

  • A refreshed Z identity.

    • The Z plastic mark has been updated to fit the new visual system while remaining easy to recognize.

  • Cleaner information hierarchy.

    • Instead of multiple design elements competing for attention, the information on the disc has been organized around what players actually need to know.

  • A refined feel.

    • Updates throughout our manufacturing process have allowed us to continue improving the consistency of the surface, grip, and overall hand feel of our premium plastics.

The result is still unmistakably Z, just in a better look and feel.

ESP PLASTIC BLEND CHANGES

ESP receives the same overall approach while maintaining an identity of its own. ESP continues to showcase the color, swirls, bursts, and variation that make the blend unique, so the artwork is intentionally designed to work with the plastic rather than cover it up. The mold stays front and center. The plastic remains easy to identify. And the information surrounding both becomes easier to read.

WHAT YOU’LL NOTICE:

  • A cleaner stock layout.

    • Each element has a clearer purpose and position.

  • More emphasis on the mold.

    • The disc name becomes one of the first things you see, especially when discs are displayed vertically on a retail shelf.

  • A connected Z and ESP system.

    • Both lines share a common design language while maintaining their own plastic identities.

  • Updated signature treatments.

    • Select ESP Signature molds use a two-foil treatment that gives the athlete and mold identity additional separation within the new system.

  • Improved consistency in hand feel.

    • Like Z, ESP has been part of our ongoing work to refine the finish and feel players experience when they pick up a new disc.

REFINING THE NAMES YOU KNOW
Refreshed Wordmarks pt1

One of the biggest opportunities within this refresh was looking at the mold identities themselves. Over decades of releases, different molds naturally developed different wordmarks, artwork styles, proportions, and visual treatments. Some became iconic almost immediately. Others evolved through multiple generations.

Rather than forcing every disc into one identical treatment, we reviewed the lineup mold by mold. Some wordmarks received larger updates. Others only needed small refinements. And some already had an identity strong enough that the best decision was simply to preserve what made them recognizable. THE GOAL WASN’T UNIFORMITY.

It was consistency. We still want each mold to have its own personality. The Buzzz shouldn’t suddenly look like the Force simply because they both say Discraft. Instead, the refreshed wordmark system creates common visual rules while leaving room for each mold to maintain its own identity.

Some mold names received more significant updates to improve legibility, balance, and compatibility with the new stock system. These changes allow the mold name to function as a stronger identifier, especially on retail shelves where the edge or upper portion of the disc may be the first thing a player sees.

Changes to OS and SS lineup structure

Other molds required a lighter touch. When a wordmark has become part of the identity of the disc itself, changing it simply to make it new doesn’t make sense. In those cases, the goal was refinement rather than replacement.

We cleaned up the presentation. Improved consistency. Preserved the character.

BUILT FOR THE SHELF
New visual representation of Refresh discs on the shelf

This may be one of the smallest changes that makes one of the biggest differences.

Historically, Discraft branding often carried much of the visual weight on a stock disc.

Within the refreshed system, the mold name becomes a much stronger part of the shelf presentation. When you’re looking through a row of discs, we want you to find the Buzzz, Cicada, Zone, Force, Luna, or whichever mold you’re searching for as quickly as possible.

Because finding the right disc shouldn’t require decoding the stamp.

SIGNATURE DISCS, BUILT AROUND THE PLAYER

Examples of Signature Series discs for ESP and Z

Signature discs occupy a unique place in the Discraft lineup. They represent the mold. They represent Discraft, and they represent the player whose name is on the disc.

The refreshed signature system was built to give each of those elements room to do its job.

Rather than creating a completely different design language for every athlete or mold, the new system establishes a consistent framework that still allows each player’s identity to come through.

Comparison in changes from previous Z & ESP to our Refresh design

PLAYER SIGNATURE - The athlete remains one of the defining elements of the disc, giving players an immediate connection to the Team Discraft athlete associated with the mold.

MOLD IDENTITY - The mold name remains prominent and easier to identify within the larger stock system.

PLASTIC - Plastic information is presented in a more consistent location and visual language.

DISC CATEGORY - Category information helps players quickly understand where the disc fits within the lineup.

FLIGHT RATINGS - Flight information remains easy to reference without taking attention away from the mold itself.

***On select ESP Signature discs, the new system introduces a two-foil presentation, allowing the signature treatment and mold identity to work together without either getting lost.

Team Discraft athletes with their signature series discs

Team Discraft includes players with different personalities, playing styles, signature molds, and visual identities. The refreshed system creates consistency across the lineup without removing what makes each athlete’s disc feel connected to them. When you see a Signature disc, we want the hierarchy to be immediate: The player, the mold and the information you need.

Updating the artwork was only part of the opportunity. Once we started looking closely at how discs were presented, it raised a larger question: How do we make the entire Discraft lineup easier to understand? Disc golf has changed and the lines between traditional disc categories aren’t always as simple as they once were. A modern approach disc can overlap with what players once considered a midrange.

High-speed drivers can have dramatically different purposes despite sharing similar speeds.

Some discs are designed around maximum distance, others are designed around control.

Some are built to turn, while some are designed specifically not to. That meant our refresh couldn’t stop with artwork, we needed to look at the system underneath it.

RETHINKING DISC CATEGORIES

Visual of the changes to category on disc
**6 to 9 speed discs will now be labeled as "fairway driver"

The Discraft lineup has grown significantly over the years. As new molds entered the lineup and disc design continued to evolve, some of the traditional categories used throughout disc golf became increasingly broad. Calling something a “driver” doesn’t necessarily tell you how it is meant to be used. Even “midrange” and “putter” can mean very different things depending on the mold. So we took another look.

The updated Discraft category system is designed to give players a clearer picture of where a disc fits and what role it is designed to fill.

Official Discraft Disc Categories with Refresh

  • Putt and Approach (1-4 Speed)

  • Mid-range (5-6 Speed)

  • Fairway Driver (7-9 Speed)

  • Distance Driver (10+ Speed)

WHY CHANGE THE CATEGORIES?

Because the category should actually help you choose a disc. A player looking for a Zone and a player looking for a Buzzz may both technically be shopping within slower-speed discs, but they are looking for two very different flights. The same is true across the driver lineup. The updated category create clearer separation between those roles and make it easier to move through the lineup based on the shot you need rather than simply the speed printed on the disc.

NEW FLIGHT NUMBERS
Flight numbers update

Once we began looking at how molds fit within the lineup, flight numbers naturally became part of the conversation. Flight numbers are one of the quickest tools players have for understanding a disc, but they are still a description. They are not the disc itself. As our lineup has expanded and we’ve gathered years of feedback from Team Discraft athletes, retailers, everyday players, and our own testing, some molds no longer sat exactly where we felt they should within the larger Discraft system.

THE IMPORTANT NOTE: The molds themselves have not changed simply because the numbers did.

WHY UPDATE FLIGHT NUMBERS?

Flight numbers are most useful when they help players make comparisons. If two discs behave differently but their flight makes them appear almost identical, the numbers aren’t doing enough work.

By reevaluating select molds within the context of the full lineup, we can create clearer separation and more realistic expectations before a player ever throws the disc. That is particularly valuable for someone discovering Discraft for the first time. Experienced players may already know exactly how their Buzzz, Heat, Force, Zone, or Cicada flies. A new player only has the information printed on the disc, we want that information to be as useful as possible.

Note: To be more aligned with the disc golf industry, our Discraft stability rating will be removed on future releases.

ONE SYSTEM

Throughout this refresh, we’ve touched nearly every part of how Discraft products are presented. We refined the Discraft logo, refreshed the look of Z and ESP, improved consistency in grip and feel, strengthened individual mold identities, clarified our Signature system, reevaluated disc categories and flight numbers, and developed a better way to visualize how a disc actually flies.

Each of those changes solves a different problem. Together, they create something much bigger: a more connected Discraft lineup.

Our goal is to make every part of the experience easier to understand. The mold should be easier to find. The plastic should be easier to identify. Signature athletes should be easier to recognize. Flight characteristics should be easier to compare. And as players move from one Discraft product to another, everything should feel like it belongs to the same system.

That matters whether you’ve thrown a Buzzz for the last 20 years, you’re a retailer helping someone build their first bag, or you’re picking up a Discraft disc for the very first time, great discs are only part of the equation. Players also need clear, useful information that gives them confidence in what they’re choosing and helps them understand where that disc fits within their game.

That’s what this refresh is designed to provide.

Not by removing the personality, history, or individual identities that have made these discs what they are, but by building a stronger structure around them.

THE DISCS YOU KNOW ARE STILL HERE.

The Buzzz is still the Buzzz. The Zone is still the Zone.

The molds that have earned permanent places in players’ bags aren’t being replaced or reinvented. Instead, we’re creating a clearer and more consistent way to tell their stories, understand their flights, and see how they fit within the larger Discraft lineup. And this isn’t simply about what the lineup looks like today.

This refresh gives us a foundation we can continue building on as new molds are developed, new plastics are introduced, new athletes join the team, and new ideas push Discraft forward. It creates a system capable of evolving alongside the products and the players who throw them.

This is the next step in building a clearer, stronger, and more connected Discraft.

And we’re just getting started.
